Liquid ammonia for medicine is a colorless liquid with a strong pungent odor. Ammonia is an important chemical raw material. In order to facilitate transportation and storage, gaseous ammonia is usually pressurized or cooled to obtain liquid ammonia. Ammonia is easily soluble in water and forms an alkaline solution of ammonium hydroxide. Most of the liquid ammonia is stored in pressure bottles or steel tanks, and cannot coexist with acetaldehyde, acrolein, boron and other substances. Liquid ammonia is widely used in industry and is corrosive and volatile, so its chemical accident rate is very high.

Liquid ammonia is a good solvent. Due to the polarity of the molecule and the existence of hydrogen bonds, liquid ammonia is very similar to water in many physical properties. Some active metals can replace hydrogen and form hydroxides from water, but it is not easy to replace hydrogen with liquid ammonia. But liquid ammonia can dissolve metals and form a blue solution. Liquid metal ammonia solution can conduct electricity and slowly decompose to release hydrogen, which is highly reducing. For example, the liquid ammonia solution of sodium: the liquid ammonia solution of metal is blue. Because of the formation of "ammonia electrons" in the solution, it can conduct electricity and has a strong reducibility.
